Susana Casal is Assistant Professor at University of Porto - Faculty of Pharmacy and researcher at LAQV/REQUIMTE.
She received her PhD in Nutrition and Food Chemistry in 2004, focused on coffee chemical changes induced by roasting and development of analytical tools for coffee quality and authenticity control. Presently, her main research interests are focused on food science and technology, using diverse chromatographic methodologies to support food quality improvement, particularly in the lipids domain.
Her analytical know-how has also been used to support several studies in the field of public health. Among the most recent dedicated research lines is olive oil, as well as studies of new lipid sources, food surveys on trans-fatty acids and coffee analysis, both in terms of quality improvement and authenticity.
Her collaborations go beyond the academic frontiers, with works developed with several national industries and international organizations, as the WHO.
She is editor for 4 scientific journals, a top reviewer in the field of agricultural and biological sciences (2016 and 2017 - Publons) and during her career she has awarded with 8 academic and scientific awards. With a participation in 15 research projects, supervision of 6 PhD thesis (plus 5 ongoing) and 18 master thesis, and publication of more than 140 indexed articles and 19 book chapters, she holds an h-index of 31 (Scopus).
